At first I thought it was just the odd accident, but after shooting a wedding and a party recently and seeing it occuring at both shoots, I have noticed a phenomenon which I will label 'The Arms Conspiracy'.
Peoples' arms are conspiring against me to ruin potentially great shots! This phenomenon can appear whenever you're photographing people, whether in the studio or at events. The first time it occured was when I was photographing a toddler in the studio. The lighting, framing and expression were spot on, and when you see that in the viewfinder, you know you have one of your best shots of the shoot. You press the shutter release to capture it when suddenly an arm appears in frame, like a lightning strike, right in the shot! In this instance it was the father moving a toy. Your great shot is gone forever... leaving you with an out of focus limb and a glimpse of what could have been one of the best shots of the shoot.
This has now happened several times since then, hence why I have given it a name. I shall now be collecting photographic evidence of this phenomenon to support my case. I photographed an 18th birthday party last weekend and was photographing the dancefloor. Often small discos have a rather dissapointing lighting rig that makes getting good shots extra hard, but at this party the rig was good, consisting of lasers and plenty of lights. Firing on continuous mode to try and capture the lighting and dancers at 'that moment' I managed to capture this shot, which would have been great - the white back-lighting, the haze, the dancers looking straight into the lens.... and there you have it, an arm ruining the shot!

I'm with you dude. I will also go looking for evidence of this mounting problem for photographers the world over. There may be no WMD's to speak of but there definately is and 'Arms Conspiracy' |
