Don't Make Them Wait

I sometimes find it difficult to get shots when I'm on a social, as I often feel like I'm holding my friends up or even boring them while I take photographs. They say "Don't worry, take your time", which whilst very supportive and generous, is a comment that should I follow it they surely would regret it. If I took my time I would probably be there for a while to take a scene in and be subjective about it, thinking about the composition and what the focal point is.

However,on reflection, I think that the speed that which I am forced to take shots is helping me grow and improve much more than if I could work at my own pace and I should embrace the opportunity. A prime example of this is when I photographed the "Cold Snaps" series, due to the thawing snow, it was a case of get there, shoot quick, go to the next location. I think it worked. If I really think about it, my most popular landscape shots always seem to be the ones that I have taken in haste, rather than ones where I have spent time at the location assessing compositional and lighting qualities. I guess this means I perform best when under pressure!

The above shot was on the return to the Sovreign Harbour Marina in Eastbourne. I was looking at the light as we were walking back to the car and thought the sun was probably too low to provide any good shots but nevertheless, I still had the camera round my neck with my "nifty fifty" fitted when I saw a streak of gold in the water. I stopped at the spot and fired off a few frames whilst Jo and our friends carried on ahead. The first exposure I took of this scene was 4:51pm and 19 seconds, the exposure you see was 4:51 and 38 seconds and the final exposure where the reflection had disappeared was 4:52pm and 19 seconds. In that space of time I have gone from getting a shot, to the shot being gone and I find it amazing how little time you get to capture it. Being able to master this "quick fire" approach will definitely benefit my future wedding photography service, when it really is about THE moment!
