I'm not really a winter person. It's okay on the run up to Christmas and New Year but, once the festivities are over, the first months of the year seem like such a barren place to be whilst waiting for Spring to arrive. The weather is cold, the trees are bare and generally landscapes don't seem quite as photogenic as they should be. It's all to tempting to just forget about the gloomy winter days when it comes to landscape photography.
Mordor When I first started out shooting landscapes, I was after blue skies and sunny scenes. In the last 6 months or so though, I have begun enjoying taking shots of the oppressive winter skies, the sort of days when there is thick cloud cover but you can see a gap near the horizon where strong yellow sunlight seeps through. Winter landscapes do have a certain feeling to them, usually the clouds are interesting and as the light is low throughout the winter, scenes always have a dramatic look - particularly reminiscent of looking out to Mordor from Minas Tirith in the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King film.
This is yet another landscape shot of Ashdown Forest taken when we were travelling home from Crawley. It was one of those days when as usual, other aspects of life are getting in the way of being able to photograph at will. However, we pulled into one of the car parks on the forest and I jumped out the car and got some shots. It was very cold and we didn't have much time so I practiced my latest "hit and run" technique of setting a high ISO on the camera and shooting hand held rather than messing about with a tripod.
