The SituationI have gotten to the point now where when I work on photos, my system can't keep up with me - or in other words, my PC is limiting my work capacity. When I want to use sliders to adjust exposure and curves, jump to other photos, make local adjustments etc I often have to wait several seconds before the software responds. It may not sound like much but to an extent it is cumulative and every little step of the editing process is slowed. This issue really needs to be resolved as it's important for me to be able to do basic things quickly - especially with things getting busier. I need a system that is a digital photography workhorse, standing up to daily heavy use.
I've got my eyes on a quad core processor, a new motherboard and some more RAM as it seems that this setup should handle all the basic tasks in Lightroom very well. One thing to consider would be going to a 64bit operating system but that's going to need some research first before I make the jump and even then - do I switch to Vista or wait for Windows 7? I suppose that if I make sure my hardware is compatible, I can always upgrade at a later date.
For starters, I have ordered an internal 1 terabyte (1000 gigabytes) drive. This drive will be where all my photos are stored from now on because I am running out of space on my 250 gigabyte drive after 20 months of photography and really can never have enough space when it comes to photos (I need storage breathing space between house-keeping duties too).
I have also added a 1.5 terabyte external drive for backup so that none of my work is at risk from drive failure. I'm sitting here right now waiting for the beast to format - it will take an age!
I've freshly reinstalled Windows (as it always slows over time). I'll see how I get on with the extra space for a few days while I plan the new system components I will need.
