What Inspired Me to Become a Photographer (Part One)

As far as I know, this shot of Playmobil toys arranged in my bedroom was the first photograph I took on my Dad's 35mm film camera (I don't know what make or model). I must have been 6 years old. Since then I was given a 35mm point and shoot camera which I took with me on holidays or school trips (usually to receive somewhat lack-lustre shots usually ruined by under-exposure, bad focus or fingers over the lens).

I remember around the age of 9 or 10 years, I was a Cub Scout and my Dad suggested I try for the photography badge. This involved learning about the different parts of the camera but didn't concentrate so much on technique. After filling out a question sheet I then had a critique from who I can only assume was someone from a local camera club. I had to take some prints of my photos that I liked. I remember being very disappointed that he found so much fault with them but I did learn something from it. To this day I can remember him telling me to fill the frame and not leave unnecessary negative space in the shot.

My next camera was an Olympus Trip 35. "It looks old fashioned Chris but, it's a good camera" my Dad said when he gave it to me. It did look old fashioned. When I took it on school trips, everyone around me had either a basic chunky point and shoot or they had the latest compact Kodak cameras with batteries and flashing lights. I don't remember feeling embarrassed so much as wondering how ridiculous they thought I looked with such an old camera - it got even worse if I popped on my hot-shoe flash!
